Filip Maciejuk on Tour of Flanders crash: "This should not happen and was a big error in my judgement"

The Tour of Flanders 2023 will without a doubt be marked by a terrible crash, where a Bahrain - Victorious rider went off-road and collided with others in the head of the peloton causing a mass crash. Filip Maciejuk was disqualified from the race due to this, and has apologized to those affected.

I’m really sorry for my mistake and causing the crash today. I hope all those involved are in good health and safe. This should not happen and was a big error in my judgement," the Polish rider wrote on Twitter. "I had no intention of causing this. All I can do now is apologise for my mistake and learn from this in the future. Sorry again to the peloton, my teammates and the fans."

The Polish rider was riding in support of Matej Mohoric - who has in the meantime abandoned in a different crash - close to the first ascent of the Oude Kwaremont. There was not room for all riders who wanted to be at the head of the peloton and the Polish rouleur took too many risks. This did not end well, as he lost control over the bike and collided with other riders in the group.

The crash led to the abandon of Tim Wellens with whom he collided, but also took down many other riders including Wout van Aert, Julian Alaphilipe and Peter Sagan.
