Lotte Kopecky will take to the start of the Belgian National Championship road race and overwhelming favourite for her third victory in four years. As Sporza analyst Ine Beyen explains though, that could make things more difficult.
"At a Belgian Championships, the key question is always: will alliances be forged? Between Kopecky and another team, for example. Because she doesn't have a team to support herself," Beyen tells Sporza. "If it becomes a sprint and Kopecky does not make it, then I will mainly look at Julie De Wilde."
Kopecky is fresh off the back of taking her fifth straight Belgian national time-trial title and will be full of confidence heading into the road race. The tactics around the race mean there is no guarantee for the Team SD Worx rider however.
"Of course there is always a chance that someone can avoid the sprint. Nobody expected that denouement last year in Middelkerke. Only one person needs to doubt. Because everyone will ride on Kopecky's wheel," Beyen explains. "Watch Margot Vanpachtenbeke . She has already proven that she can choose the right moment in the match, even at the highest level, such as in the Brabantse Pijl. She's doing well too, so be sure to keep an eye on her."
