"Everybody in the United States wants a new rider who can perform on the general of a Grand Tour" - McNulty aware of pressure to succeed from back home

One of the great hopes for the future of American cycling, Brandon McNulty has revealed his plan for 2023 is to focus on the general classification in one-week stage races, opting to go for stage wins in the Grand Tours.

"In 2023, I think I will focus more on week-long races and also try my luck for a stage in a Grand Tour. I think it's realistic,” the 24-year-old UAE Team Emirates rider told VeloNews. "Everyone knows that going for a classification in a Grand Tour is terrible. is a big step for that."

McNulty was a stage winner at Paris-Nice last year and is a former overall winner of the Giro di Sicilia in 2019. For many years now big things have been expected of McNulty by his fellow Americans, something he himself is still trying to come to terms with. "Everybody in the United States wants a new rider who can perform on the general of a Grand Tour," he says. "I like to see how far I can go as a general classification rider. It's a very high level that you have to have, but I also think I have certain of these qualities in me."
