The steady improvement of Egan Bernal over the last few months continues to be a great sight for fans of cycling. On stage 5 of the Critérium du Dauphiné he was again right in the mix with the GC favourites.
“I am happy to be at the front. I have a really good feeling but lacked the confidence to follow when Carapaz went," said the former Tour de France and Giro d'Italia winner in his post-stage interview. Bernal is of course, still battling to get back to the kind of form that saw him claim two Grand Tours after a torrid couple of years with injuries.
"I was also a little scared because I thought it was not my rhythm," continues the INEOS Grenadiers rider, who could be coming into form at just the right time with the 2023 Tour de France fast approaching. “Everything is new to me, being able to compete with the real favourites. I did not expect this, so I must be happy."
The stage was eventually won by Jonas Vingegaard who also moved into the overall lead of the race. Bernal is now in 19th in the general classification. “That's because of the time trial. We already knew it wouldn't be good. I hadn't trained much on it, so I had to be realistic," he concludes.
