Egan Bernal was already active early on at the
Volta a Catalunya, putting himself in fourth in the overall standings, as he took maximum bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint on the opening stage of the race, with him looking to contest the general classification later on in the week.
However, the
INEOS Grenadiers rider did suffer some misfortune in the closing kilometres, as he crashed inside the final 3km of the stage, which meant that he received the same time as the other favourites. He did not escape unscathed though, as he picked up some minor bruising and abrasions.
After the stage, Bernal was assessed by his team doctors and has been cleared to continue the race, with tomorrow’s stage being a crucial stage for the general classification, as it features a mountaintop finish to Vallter 2000.
