Dylan Groenewegen took victory on the Tour de Hongrie opening stage after a massive crash caused chaos in the race's finale.
Stage 1 was expected to be a day for the sprinters. Into Szentgotthárd, the race was believed to favour the sprinters in its flat finale as the first race lead was to be decided in a flat finish. Five riders decided to try their luck in the breakaway, most notably Charles Planet (Team Novo Nordisk).

With 40km to go the breakaway's lead had reduced to just 38 seconds meaning a bunch sprint finish was almost a certainty.
The breakaway were swallowed up by the bunch with 27km left and some impetus was suddenly injected into the peloton as the sprint trains prepared themselves.
A number of top sprinters including the likes of Dylan Groenewegen, Sam Bennett and Fabio Jakobsen were in the peloton and as such the fight for position at the front was fierce.
A massive crash with just over a kilometre to go caused havoc with the bunch as a numbers of riders went down and hard.
Sam Bennett was the first man to open his sprint, challenged by Groenewegen and Caleb Ewan. After a close, photo-finish it was Groenewegen who took the win with Bennett second.
