Dylan Groenewegen has had a complicated start to his season with
Team BikeExchange - Jayco. Despite having won two stages at the Saudi Tour, he didn't manage to back that up in the following months. Yesterday at the
Tour de Hongrie he returned to his winning ways, with a dashing sprint that left Fabio Jakobsen without a chance of competing for the win - a shocking sight.
Having missed out on contention on all sprints until stage four, there was a lot of tension in the Australian team's camp. However Groenewegen returned to the front in style: "Today we made a new plan. It was also a tough final, with two small climbs. On the high road the team did a great job for me. I'm almost out of voice from screaming, but I'm really happy with my teammates, that they were able to put me in a good position;" he said in a post-race interview.
"We used everyone this time. The previous days we were boxed in, today we had the space. The whole team was very strong. They got me in perfect position for the last right turn. Then I was able to sprint for the win," he added. Groenewegen was in the wheel of Fabio Jakobsen, who he left behind easily once he launched his sprint towards the line to take his third win of the season, a very motivating one in a crucial period of the season.
"At two hundred meters before the finish I had very good legs to sprint. I went and saw no one... It is a difficult season. We had two wins with the sprint train, but after that we had a lot to do with illness and I crashed. Now we are the lucky ones," he concluded.
