The Milano-Sanremo Women was not short of drama, but nothing came close to the moment Debora Silvestri went headfirst over a roadside barrier on the descent of the Cipressa, falling several metres onto a lower section of road while trying to avoid a pile-up involving Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Kim Le Court. Six days later, the 27-year-old Italian has left hospital and is heading home.
The incident happened at a critical point in the race, just as the Cipressa descent was beginning to shape the finale. Silvestri, riding for Laboral Kutxa, had no way to avoid the crash in front of her and paid a heavy price.
She broke five ribs and sustained a small shoulder fracture, and the severity of the impact also required respiratory support during her time in hospital. The images broadcast on live television left little doubt about how serious the situation was.

Back on the road to recovery

On Friday, Laboral Kutxa confirmed the positive news in an official statement. “After several days marked by caution and constant medical monitoring, Debora Silvestri has evolved favourably and can now continue her recovery outside the hospital,” read the official team statement.
"After six days hospitalised, Debora has been discharged and is already on her way home, where she will continue her recovery process alongside her family and supported by the entire team."
The club also made clear that their medical staff will remain closely involved throughout her recovery, adding: "The team's medical staff will remain by her side at every step of the recovery, always prioritising that her condition progresses in the best possible conditions. Forza Debora."
