The
Tour de France this year saw an interesting battle for the fourth place in the overall classification in the Pyrenees, which often included
David Gaudu and
Nairo Quintana going head to head.
The Frenchman eventually won the battle, as Quintana fell to sixth place in the final time-trial, but he was nevertheless asked about his rival in an interview with Ouest-France: “I don't care if Quintana was disqualified from the Tour. It is clear that not everyone respects the rules."
The two had a battle which often saw them attacking each other instead of working towards a possible podium position. The Frenchman proved his credentials as a top Grand Tour contender by finishing in fourth position, whilst Quintana was later stripped of his sixth place due to positive controls of tramadol - which he is currently defending himself against.
"There was resentment with him in the Tour, but it doesn't matter, I race for myself, not for Nairo. That yes, I am going to train to try to beat him even in the water," he concluded.
