Damiano Caruso has decided to postpone his retirement from
professional cycling, despite previously indicating that 2025 would mark the
end of his long and successful career.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport,
the 37-year-old Italian will remain active in the peloton in 2026.
Just a few months ago, Caruso had all but confirmed his
departure from the sport. “I'm ninety percent sure that 2025 will be my last
year as a professional cyclist,” he told OA Sport in December. That
certainty now appears to have shifted.
Currently riding in support of Antonio Tiberi at the 2025
Giro d’Italia, Caruso has impressed with his form and commitment so far. His
performances in the mountains are set to be crucial to
Bahrain - Victorious’ GC
ambitions, and so far he has shown all the experience and reliability that has
defined his career.
Caruso turned professional in 2009 and has since carved out
a reputation as one of the most trusted domestiques in the sport. He played key
support roles for leaders such as Ivan Basso, Vincenzo Nibali, Richie Porte,
and Mikel Landa, as well as many others, while also proving he could lead when
called upon. His biggest personal success came at the 2021 Giro d’Italia, where
he finished second overall behind Egan Bernal, capping a brilliant three-week
ride where he was only beaten by a Tour de France winner.
