Damiano Caruso was in the mix for a stage win on stage 18 of the 2023 Vuelta a Espana, eventually finishing a distant second behind Remco Evenepoel. Post-stage, Caruso spoke of his experience trying to ride with Evenepoel in the breakaway.
“It was a tough day. Everyone knew that Remco was the strongest in the leading group. He has shown that too," the Italian of Bahrain - Victorious recaps in his post-stage interview with Eurosport. "Of course he deserves the win. As far as I'm concerned, this second place – behind a champion like him – means a lot. I am satisfied. I couldn't have done more.”

With Evenepoel eventually winning 4:44 ahead of Caruso, the difference in level between the Belgian and the rest of the breakaway was clear for all to see. Caruso admits that even following in the wheel of the Soudal - Quick-Step leader was a struggle at times.
“Following him is like following a scooter," Caruso hilariously quips. "His pace was too high for me, but also for many, many other riders. It's okay."
