The cycling world is devastated by the tragic death of 18-year-old Swiss rider Muriel Furrer, who died after a serious crash at the Road World Championships in Zurich. All throughout social media condolences have been sent from many big figures of the sport.
"I am stunned by the death of the young U19 rider Muriel Furrer," wrote Sports Minister Viola Amherd. Sandra Mäder, the mother of Swiss cyclist Gino Mäder, is one of them as someone who shares the same unfortunate experience:
"My heart goes out to your family. Be strong, dear Furrer family, I feel for you. Very intensely," Mäder wrote on Instagram. "I know so well how you must be feeling right now. Hold on tight. I wish you lots of strength to get through these difficult hours."
Furrer, a promising talent in road and mountain biking, had won a bronze medal at the European Mountain Bike Championships in May 2023. Her death overshadowed the event, but at the request of her family, the World Championships will continue in Zurich, with flags at half-mast and simple award ceremonies. The exact circumstances of the fall are still unclear and investigations are ongoing.

Ongoing debate about safety in cycling

Gino Mäder tragically died on June 16, 2023, after falling into a ravine on a descent during the Tour de Suisse. He succumbed to his injuries the following day after crashing on the descent of the Albulapass. Similarly, the promising Norwegian cyclist André Drege died on July 6, 2024, after crashing heavily on the descent from the Grossglockner during the Tour of Austria.

His death is a painful reminder of the dangers to which cyclists are exposed, even with improved safety measures. It has not been confirmed, but reported by Blick that the athlete was not seen on the time of crash and fell into a wooded area where she likely remained for a long time, without the knowledge of race officials or the team. The lack of race radios and/or GPS trackers has been heavily criticized as possible solutions to what has been a tragic event. It has also been indicated that staff members of the race are not allowed to discuss details.

Four-time time trial world champion Fabian Cancellara expressed his deep sorrow on Instagram and wrote: "It's crazy to lose such a young athlete. My thoughts are with her family at this difficult moment." Mountain bike star Nino Schurter also expressed his sympathy: "Terribly sad news. My deepest condolences to Muriel's loved ones."
Reigning road world champion Lotte Kopecky shared her grief in an Instagram story: "It happens far too often and far too quickly. My thoughts are with her family, friends and teammates."
