The cycling market surprised the sports world on Friday with the unexpected signing of
Cian Uijtdebroeks by Movistar Team. The Belgian rider, who arrived to Visma | Lease a Bike in 2024 as the great promise of the future, leaves the Dutch team without previous notice and with only two seasons wearing the yellow jersey.
No one saw this latest addition to the telephone team coming, which has undoubtedly made a great leap in quality when it comes to contesting what they like best: general classifications. With Uijtdebroeks they get that second leader after Enric Mas that the situation was crying out for.
Cian Uijtdebroeks' contract break with Visma | Lease a Bike, as expected, has produced several reactions from cycling's leading figures. Expert José De Cauwer, a compatriot of the new Movistar Team rider, has commented on it in an analysis for
Sporza.
"This is his third team at 22 years old.... That indicates a certain degree of restlessness. He has a lot of desire and aspires to a lot. That means he's extremely motivated," Jose De Cauwer began by pointing out about the media buzz in the cycling market.
In addition, José De Cauwer is looking for a logical explanation for Uijtdebroeks' decision. With
Jonas Vingegaard still leading Visma, and with Matthew Brennan growing by leaps and bounds, he may have seen little career potential if he stayed with the Dutch team.
"He probably did so because of the presence of Jonas Vingegaard, still relatively young and still active there. He also must have seen the rise of Matthew Brennan at Visma. Based on that, Cian probably concluded that it was better to look for another team where he could take more risks in important races," continued De Cauwer.

Bad relationship after your injury?
"Visma followed Cian's enthusiasm for skipping some steps in his recovery. However, in the end, that didn't benefit anyone; for example, there was a long search for the cause of his injuries. Maybe at some point the team also thought: 'Take it easy for a while,'" added Jose De Cauwer, theorizing about the possible poisoning of the relationship between the two parties.
"Perhaps Cian will find peace in Spain. Because, in my opinion, this is not necessarily a story about finding a new employer, but more about himself. Also, you used to come to a team looking for some experience, but that's not so important anymore," De Cauwer concluded about the big signing of the fall. Will Uijtdebroeks succeed at Movistar Team?
