Jasper Philipsen has had a strong end to his season and today he has won the
Sparkassen Münsterland Giro, one of the final opportunities of the season for the sprinters to face each other. Tim Merlier crashed in the final kilometers, and in the middle of the chaos the
Alpecin-Deceuninck thrived to take another win.
Colby Simmons, Vinzent Dorn and Rasmus Bogh Wallin formed the day's breakaway, a flat race that didn't offer many opportunities to attack and a bunch sprint was always going to be the most likely scenario, although a few raindrops would make things nervous at some points in the race. The group wouldn't survive until the decisive kilometers of the race however.
With 8 kilometers to go Jonas Abrahamsen launched an attack during a cobbled and technical sector, which stretched the peloton, and we also saw a crash for one of the main favourites Tim Merlier who had here his final opportunity to win in the European Champion's jersey. The peloton was split there, certainly losing other sprinters who looked to have a victory on the day.
It was a chaotic sprint but Lidl-Trek found ground to leadout Tim Torn Teutenberg who launched his sprint first. But in a pure flat bunch sprint, the other big favourite for the race timed his sprint perfectly and came through to take the victory: Jasper Philipsen. It was a very tight one, as he beat compatriot Arnaud de Lie and Pavel Bittner to the line.
