Jumbo-Visma has put in another demolishing performance at the Vuelta a Espana, Jonas Vingegaard was above the rest on stage 16's summit finish, but the time he won on Sepp Kuss and Primoz Roglic was argued by some as breaking team tactics. Roglic puts that behind.
"It was a fast, short and beautiful stage," Roglic said at the end of the day. Vingegaard attacked in the opening kilometers of the climb and built a very large gap, of over a minute, in the 4.9-kilometer ascent. A ride that would likely not be matched by anyone riding at their best, but notably the gap was inflated largely due to the stalemate that followed in the GC group.
With UAE Team Emirates attacking with Finn Fisher-Black and then not helping Juan Ayuso limiting losses, Movistar having no riders to chase and other teams launching attacks, the gap soared into a minute very quickly. Primoz Roglic and Sepp Kuss did not chase their teammate down at first and followed the wheels. Eventually Roglic then did attack entering the final kilometer which caused a few splits, but he didn't have the legs to capitalize on it and finished alongside the other main favourites for the stage - gaining a few seconds on the American.
Vingegaard's time gains however see the Slovenian fall to third place, and see the Tour de France winner come very close to the red jersey, with two massive mountain stages ahead. It is unclear what the tactics will be in Jumbo-Visma and if there will be the attempt to preserve Sepp Kuss' lead in the race. The Angliru will possibly be decisive when it comes to the decision of the overall win. Asked if in Bejes that was the plan, Roglic responded: "We won, right?"
