Astana Qazaqstan Team are looking for order in their lineup for the coming weeks of the race, and tomorrow's battle on the slopes of the most active volcano in Europe will be an important day for the overall classification as some riders are expected to fall out of contention.
"The first priority is the GC, the Giro is long and if things open up over the course of three weeks, and if there’s an opportunity to take a stage to target a stage, for sure I will do it," Dombrowski told VeloNews. With the first rest day - if it can be called that - there is not yet a clear order in the race as only small differences have been created, and the overall classification contenders have avoided crashes on the road.
"Our team’s objective here in this Giro is the GC, these first days are more about staying out of trouble, and I don’t think there will be big differences made, but there could be some big losses," Dombrowski warned. The American has showed good form in the recent Tour of the Alps, and is expected to be a key card for the Kazakh team's ambitions in the mountains.
As for the leadership within Astana Qazaqstan Team, Joe Dombrowski reveals that even within the team, the plan is a done deal, and both Vincenzo Nibali and Miguel Ángel López will be testing themselves on Mount Etna and expecting that a natural order is established. Nibali is currently sitting 23 seconds ahead of the Colombian, and is making for a dozen Giro's this year which include half a dozen podiums. With this said, it's expected that once the climbs come, López will emerge as the team leader.
What Dombrowski expects of Nibali, he tells: “To be honest, I don’t know exactly. The Italians would say he’s on a bit of a jolly, and Nibali can move freely in the race." However, tomorrow the situation should be clearer. "Everyone will know where they stand on GC a bit more after that first block,” he said. “For the rest, staying safe and staying out of trouble," he concluded.
