Despite the race being shortened to just 72km due to adverse weather conditions on stage 5 of the Tour of Oman, Green Mountain proved to be as decisive as ever in determining the outcome of the race, as Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) took the win on the slopes of Jebel Akhdar and claimed the overall victory at the race.
At the start of the day, the early breakaway formed after around 20km of racing, with Tord Gudmestad (Uno-X), Huub Artz (Intermarché - Wanty), Tobias Lund Andresen (dsm-firmenich PostNL) and Tegsh-bayar Batsaikhan (Roojai Insurance) all getting away in a four-man group at the head of the race.
They would take the maximum points at the only intermediate sprint of the day in Birkat Al Mouz, with Batsaikhan rolling across the line first. The riders reached the foot of Green Mountain with a decent lead on the peloton, as Artz put the hammer down on the lower slopes and pushed on alone, immediately dropping Gudmestad and Andresen as Batsaikhan fought to hold on, but was ultimately distanced too.
With the rest of his breakaway companions caught by the peloton, Artz was out front on his own, but it was not long before Yates would come to the front of the peloton and begin to whittle down the group, as he was thought to be working for his teammate Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Team Emirates), who began the day in the overall lead of the race.
However, an attack by Jan Hirt (Soudal - Quick-Step) forced Yates’ hand, as he had to follow the wheel of the Czech rider, leaving his teammate and the rest of the remaining riders in the peloton behind. The pair then chased down Artz, catching and passing him in the final kilometre, before Yates opened up his sprint and beat Hirt comfortably to take the win and the overall victory.
