Mathieu van der Poel has been wildly succeeding this cyclocross season, however he simultaneously is training hard for the World Championships and upcoming season. So far so good, the Dutchman continues to stick with the set plan which is so far working well.
"I can feel the legs. The training sessions in between are also difficult, but we stick to the plan. The cross is not subordinate, but the training in between is more important," van der Poel told In de Leiderstrui. "I continue to do endurance training between competitions, so you feel that the recovery is slightly less. However, we are just sticking to the plan." Now in Belgium for the Christmas period, van der Poel has been continuing his winning streak and found better training conditions than those of previous months.
Van der Poel has moved to Spain earlier this year and that is, according to his father Adrie, a big part of why he's been so consistent and in the form of his life throughout the year. "If I now leave back to Spain, I want to start training properly instead of recovering from the Christmas period. It is not difficult to leave for such an endurance training, once you have left it is also a habit," he says.
"The only difficult thing is the weather sometimes, but this week I was lucky that the weather was good when I had to ride for a long time. That will be better in Spain, so I'm looking forward to that. It's a different kind of winter than before, when I had to go full throttle twice every weekend. Now I have a slightly broader base and you notice that you can recover more quickly from those efforts."
