Thijs Aerts, younger brother of cyclocross star Toon Aerts, has announced his decision to retire from professional cyclocross at the end of the 2024/2025 season. The 28-year-old will bid farewell to the sport on 23 February at the Sluitingsprijs in Malle, marking the end of a journey that began when he was just 11 years old.

"Since my first steps in the world of cyclo-cross at the age of 11, I have been able to experience everything. Every mud section, every course, every victory and every setback have made me the rider I am today. I have been able to realize my childhood dreams thanks to my two teams Charles Liégeois Roastery CX and Baloise Trek Lions. With my brother Toon we have created countless memories," Aerts shared on the Intermarche-Wanty website.

Reflecting on his career, Aerts expressed pride in his efforts but admitted that the challenges of maintaining top performance had taken their toll. "I can proudly say that I have given everything every day to get the best out of myself. Recently I realised that the results were no longer in proportion to the sacrifices," he explained.

Looking ahead, Aerts plans to stay connected to the sport he loves, aiming to inspire and mentor future generations. "Only time will tell what I will do next, but one thing is for sure: cycling will undoubtedly continue to play a central role. I want to pass on my passion and experience of cyclocross to the next generations," he added.
