- There would be some point to the lost season headline if Jonas was not also riding the Vuelta this year. If he wins that with ease as expected, then all he has to do is win the Giro next year (with no serious competition), and he will be seen as highly successful.
- so i started racing at 16 and now im old and just ride a lot. mvdp is my favorite rider of all time, but Tim is my spirit animal! i’m 6-2, 225, and most all i’ve ever had to contribute to racing is the rank amateur version of tim. to be clear, i’m basically no closer to resembling tim’s abilities than i am van der poel’s, but in a world of rail-thin watts/kg monsters, when you see a big dude with huge shoulders that an entire team is tucked in behind, you can see yourself in that just a TEENY TINY bit more than the prototypical champions of this sport. tim is the most badass clydesdale of his generation, there to remind everyone that slang term doesn’t have to mean slow and plodding, it can mean strong and tireless and utterly noble in its ability to work others into the ground. farewell Tim, you’ve definitely been an inspiration and an utterly magnificent BEAST.
- I’ve never quite understood how he did it, just running that engine on and on, but there he was, so essential to the Soudal QuickStep squad. Always amazing.
- Look, it's "Tim Declercq doing Tim Declercq things!"
- I wouldn’t even say disappointing. 184 riders start the TdF 182 would trade places with Jonas. Or maybe 170 if you take our stage winners.
If he wins the Vuelta, with his other wins this year, and podiums, his year is a career for 99% of riders.
- Yes, but lost season??? Insane headline
- Love this guy. For years he spent 80% of his time on the front of the TdF peloton crushing breakaways. So many people owe wins to El Tractor
- So, bottom line is if Tadej is racing then Jonas is 2nd at best. Seems about right seeing as Pogi was not 100% from mid 2nd week of the TDF on and still Jonas could not take advantage. At the World Championship while Pogi is the favorite, Jonas is not top 5 picks. He is a stage racer and 1 day races he is not good in. And he has some tuff competition in the Vuelta Espana without Pogi even there.
- Agreed. Maybe a disappointing season so far by Jonas's high standards, But "lost season" is over the top. 2nd at the world's biggest bike race behind only a generational talent is not exactly nothing.
- Lost season? what a joke of a headline. Jumbo won the Giro, second in the Tour. multiple stage wins and one day wins, plus podium.
As for Jonas, this year alone:
1st Overall Volta ao Algarve
1st Stage 5 (ITT)
1st Stage 3 (TTT) Paris–Nice
2nd Overall Tour de France
2nd Overall Critérium du Dauphiné
Most cyclists would take these palmares for a CAREER much less a season.
I would hardly say the sky is falling. in Tadej’s two losses, he had a total of 4 or 5 bad days at most. Same with Jonas. I think Tadej is better, but incrementally, not exponentially.
