The Belgian, Olympic and world time trial champion,
Remco Evenepoel would have been hoping for a much better display on stage 13 of the 2025
Tour de France. Although the terrain wasn't totally suited to him, being caught and passed by
Jonas Vingegaard - who started 2 minutes after - was a real disaster.
Finishing 12th on the stage, 2:39 down on stage winner
Tadej Pogacar, Evenepoel's hopes of a second successive podium finish at the
Tour de France are now very much in the balance with
Florian Lipowitz,
Oscar Onley and
Kevin Vauquelin all within a minute of the
Soudal - Quick-Step leader in the general classification standings.
"I didn’t have the legs I wanted," Evenepoel admitted in a brief post-stage interview. "I felt empty. I had prepared well, but yesterday wasn’t good, and today was even worse. I didn’t focus on Vingegaard — it was just a very weak performance."
"The analysis? It just wasn’t good... pretty bad, really. The start was okay, but after five minutes on the climb, the good feeling was gone, and from then on it was just a fight for survival to the top. It was a terrible time trial," he explains self-critically. "The fact that I’m still in third and keeping the white jersey? Right now, that doesn’t mean much to me. Hopefully I can bounce back tomorrow."
