Wout van Aert has had a very packed year from start to finish, and he will be ending his season in Belgium at the
Super 8 Classic in late September.
Team Visma | Lease a Bike have just revealed the calendar of the final races of the season for the 30-year old.
Van Aert designed the winter's cyclocross period favouring his spring classics campaign on the road and followed the schedule to perfection. He raced quite a lot in February before going on an altitude training camp in March ahead of the main block of races. He ultimately found his best form in the cobbled monuments but it was only enough to finish fourth at both Flanders and Roubaix.
The Belgian still rode a few other classics afterwards with strong results and at the Giro d'Italia he won a stage and was absolutely key to Simon Yates' GC win. Whilst the team couldn't achieve the same at the Tour de France van Aert saved his race with an iconic triumph on the Champs-Elysées after becoming the first rider to drop Tadej Pogacar with an attack - on the cobbled climb to Montmartre.
There had been some speculation on whether he would race the World Championships in Rwanda but the answer is negative, it has now been confirmed. “It’s important to still set important goals for the last part of the season, and with this calendar, we’ve certainly succeeded," he said in a message issued by the team.
"At the same time, after such a packed season, it’s crucial not to overdo it. That’s why we’ve decided to end my season after the Super 8 Classic and skip both the World Championships and European Championships.”
Van Aert had been reported to race the Deutschland Tour where he will return to competition on the 20th of August but afterwards he will also take on the
Bretagne Classic where he was victorious in 2022. He will be racing the Canadian classics in mid-September and will end his season on the road on the 20th of September with the Super 8 Classic.
