Thibau Nys has conquered the Tour de Hongrie, his first overall classification at the top level; whilst Wout Poels took the stage win on the final day with an incredible sprint in the final climb.
The breakaway of the day was formed on flat roads and so it included plenty sprinters and fast men. Most noticeably Mark Cavendish who went on to take the intermediate sprints in search of the points classification. He was joined by Pavel Bittner, Niccolò Bonifazio, Kelland O'Brien, Mathijs Paasschens, Andoni López de Abetxuko, Dusan Rajovic, AJ August, David Martin, Adam Toupalik and Vincent van Hemelen.
As the riders entered the many climbs late in the day the group split to bits. In the penultimate climb two riders were left in front with O'Brien and Van Hemelen; with attacks surging in the peloton from Wout Poels, but also UAE Team Emirates who pushed the pace hard. Nys was solid in the wheels, the pace calmed down and BORA - hansgrohe picked up the pace.
The duo was caught with 18 kilometers to go, with a few minor attacks following but not being successful as the peloton quickly approached the final hilltop. UAE Team Emirates entered the climb full steam and Marc Hirschi launched the first attack with 2 kilometers to go, but was then dropped.
Emanuel Buchmann took over the head of the peloton in the steep gradients; followed only by race leader Nys, Callum Scotson and Damien Howson. After minutes spent leading the group, the German champion made another move with just over 500 kilometers to go and got an important gap, with Nys chasing.
The final meters had an incredible twist of events. Nys bridged across but could not go through Buchmann. Wout Poels came with very high speed from behind and went through the entire group to take a very strong win. He beat Howson, whilst Buchmann came third and Nys was fourth sealing the overall classification.
