Jonathan Milan is one of the very best sprinters in the world and with a luxurious leadout at
Lidl-Trek, he has achieved a lot and promises to do even more in coming years. However, the Italian's goals go much beyond the sprints, but also towards the monuments.
Milan was the great favourite to win this year's green jersey at the Tour and he delivered, winning also a couple of stages en route to Paris. “Winning that jersey and taking it to Paris was my dream, and I did it. But I really suffered in the Lourdes stage," he said in an interview at the Festival dello Sport. But the powerhouse has strong legs for longer types of efforts, and he sees his talent fit in other kinds of races.
"Now I want more. I’d love to win Milano–Sanremo, though as long as they keep the Cipressa climb, I don’t think I can. And Paris–Roubaix too. This year I finished it for the first time but one day I want to win it," he admits. Milan is a rider that could be well adapted to Roubaix due to his high weight and raw power, but Sanremo more and more became a classic for the puncheurs, not the sprinters.
Another goal in his list is also taking wins in all Grand Tours, perhaps the easiest of these remaining goals as he only has the Vuelta a España left to fulfill it. “It’s demanding, but it’s a dream of mine. Even doing it once in a career would already be a huge achievement, but doing it all in one year would be the ultimate goal.”
"You train to win, not to give victories away. I just hope my team does well too, but somehow, we always ends up winning," he concluded. Next year with Mads Pedersen, Mattias Skjelmose and Juan Ayuso all seeking their space, it will be a tricky task for the Italian to find leading space within the team.
