Elia Viviani’s future in professional cycling remains
uncertain after it was confirmed that he has not re-signed with INEOS
Grenadiers for the 2025 season. The Italian sprinter and track cyclist, who
joined INEOS Grenadiers in 2022, now faces a critical juncture in his career,
with retirement being a possibility.
Viviani’s tenure with INEOS Grenadiers has been
characterised by a focus on both road and track cycling. Despite his
significant achievements on the track, including Olympic gold in the omnium at
Rio 2016 and silver at Tokyo 2020, his results on the road have been less
notable in recent years. His inability to secure major road victories during
his time with the team likely contributed to the decision not to renew his
contract.
Speaking to Italian media, Viviani acknowledged the
challenges of recent seasons. While he has not publicly stated whether he plans
to retire, he has indicated that he is reflecting on his next steps. At the age
of 35, Viviani’s options may include a return to focusing solely on track
cycling or stepping away from professional competition altogether.
Viviani’s career has been marked by exceptional speed in
just about any race he has started. In addition to his track success, he has
won stages in all three Grand Tours – the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France,
and the Vuelta a Espana. However, the 2024 season saw him struggle to replicate
his earlier speed, raising questions about his long-term competitiveness at the
highest level of road racing.
Looking ahead, Viviani has several potential paths. While
retirement is on the table, he could also choose to continue racing with
another team or dedicate himself entirely to track events, where he remains a
strong contender. As he weighs his options, Viviani’s decision will undoubtedly
mark a significant moment in his undoubtedly illustrious career, but only time
will tell whether we will see him return in 2025.
