There were big hopes for Primoz Roglic at the 2025 Giro d'Italia. Sadly though, despite a strong start that saw the Slovenian spend time in the Maglia Rosa, he abandoned on Tuesday, bringing a premature end to his quest for another Grand Tour win.
For Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe team boss Ralph Denk, Roglic's abandonment just highlights what has been, to date, a Grand Tour consistently plagued by bad luck for his team. "It’s a pity for us as a team. This Giro d’Italia was one of our big goals for the season," Denk explains in a press release to the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe team's official website. "But over the last two weeks, luck really wasn’t on our side."
Whilst the premature exit of Roglic is undoubtedly the biggest blow the team has suffered, as mentioned, the Slovenian wasn't the only Red Bull rider to be a victim of bad luck this Giro d'Italia. "Jai Hindley crashed out and had to leave the race early," Denk recalls. "Primoz crashed three times, and now he’s simply in too much pain and carrying too many injuries to continue. Even the rest day didn’t help."
"He gave it a go today but recognised that his body was saying no, so he had to abandon the race," Denk continues his reflections. "It’s not what we wanted, but that’s sport."
Never one to just lay down and admit defeat though, Roglic and the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe team are already looking forward. Last year, after crashing out of the Tour de France, Roglic bounced back to take the overall win at the Vuelta a Espana. With the Tour coming up for Roglic later this summer, can he show similar powers of recovery and resilience this year?
"We now have to look ahead to the next, which for Primoz is the Tour de France," Denk concludes. "For him, we’re already focusing on what’s coming next in his preparation."
