Who would've thought; on the dark day for Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe a ray of hope has emerged. The young talent Giulio Pellizzari immediately stepped in to replace the abandoning Primoz Roglic and named himself into a position of a serious GC contender in almost no time.
"I've been waiting for this moment for a while, today I let out all the anger I've built up over the last few days, so I'm happy," Pellizzari told Eurosport. "Obviously I'm sorry that Primoz went home, I hope to be able to see him after the stage, but let's continue the Giro and see what happens in the next few days."
"Tomorrow I think it’s more suited to breakaways," the Italian suggested looking at the profile of stage 17 that features the mythical Mortirolo among other obstacles. However there's still 50 kilometers to go after the famous pass and although the remainder of the stage will be far from flat, it's not quite the parcours where GC men would normally open fire.
This will be one of the last opportunities for adventurers to secure a victory at this Giro and that's precisely why Pellizzari expects a tough battle to be in the front group that could last until the foot of Passo del Tonale almost 60 kilometers into the stage. "Trying to break away at the start would be pointless," continued the young climber.
Does that mean peace of arms in general classification? Not necessarily, Pellizzari contemplates: "Let’s see what happens among the big names and then we’ll see the last two stages, which I really like."
Today was a big day for the the 21-year-old who jumped 10 spots in the general classification and all of a sudden a top-5 is a real possibility. In any case it's a brand new situation for the youngster: "I don’t know if one day I’ll be able to compete for the Giro, but that’s the beauty of it, continuing to try, believing in it and hoping one day to be there to compete for the Maglia Rosa."

If his fight was for GC, he could have worked together with Carapaz when Carapaz caught up to him. But he just sat behind his wheel and didn't pull, so I thought he might be on his limit. Then, he attacked at the top. Working together with Carapaz could have been beneficial for both GC goals, a win-win. I have no idea about his thought process.
