Mike Teunissen is a rider that has seen a lot of success throughout his career, however despite not winning, today he earned the leader's jersey at the
Vuelta a Espana, which he will be using tomorrow at home roads.
“No, it was not the plan in advance. The general classification with Primoz Roglic is our priority. So this morning I was surprised when they said something different," Teunissen said in a post-stage interview. Having the same time as his teammates at
Jumbo-Visma, whoever would cross the line first today would be the new leader.
The Dutchman was given the freedom as a sprinter, and likely due to racing at home the team had the goal of seeing it's Dutch riders share the race lead. “The team leaders indicated that if we get to the last three kilometers with Primoz safely, I could participate in the sprint and therefore be the first to cross the line from Jumbo-Visma," he revealed. "I would like to thank the team for giving me this opportunity.”
Teunissen went on to finish fourth in the bunch sprint, revealing the strong form he had during the Tour de Pologne, which he has now put to good use.
“Yellow was already very special, but to be able to wear red afterwards is perhaps even more special. Robert said it was fantastic, I'm really looking forward to it. Wearing the leader's jersey at home is unbelievable," Teunissen concluded.
