Juan Ayuso is on the frontline of a new generation breaking through cycling, but his evolution has been slowed down by a recent injury which, at best case scenario, will only see him start 2023 in April.
“Juan is still in discomfort. He trains, but when the intensity increases he is in pain again. We don't know exactly what's wrong with him," team manager Joxean Matxin told El Mundo. "The expectation was that the inflammation would disappear quickly, but that is not the case."
A tendinitis is believed to be the culprit behind the recent issues. The 20-year old Spaniard has ridden to the podium of the Vuelta a Espana last year and has had a free role within the team all-year long despite the intense internal competition. The start to his 2023 season has already been delayed several times and the situation isn't looking any better for the time being.
“The plan was that he could start in the Volta a Catalunya, but that is no longer an option. And we cannot guarantee that he will make it to the Tour of the Basque Country," Matxin informed. Ayuso was set to race the Vuelta a Espana this year so for the time being the big picture is not yet at risk, but the UAE Team Emirates rider is set to miss out on most if not all of the spring campaign before he starts his season.
