As the winner of the
Tour de France, naturally questions have surfaced regarding the legitimacy of
Jonas Vingegaard and
Jumbo-Visma after such a dominant display during this year's race. The yellow jersey responded accordingly.
"We are totally clean, every one of us. I can say that to every one of you," the Dane said during yesterday's press conference in Rocamadour, right after he finished second to his teammate
Wout van Aert to secure a maiden Grand Tour win with dominant displays in the two decisive mountains stages - at the Col du Granon and Hautacam.
With Wout van Aert having an equally strong performance, and the likes of Sepp Kuss and Christophe Laporte having career-best performances in support of their leaders and also towards their own results, questions regarding the validity of the results were asked - as they are every year, due to the sport's past history and connection with doping and the damage it caused.
“No one of us is taking anything illegal," Vingegaard assured. Both he and van Aert were asked the question, and the Dane has explained his point of view on how the Dutch team has had a superior performance to that of it's rivals: "I think why we’re so good is the preparation that we do. We take altitude camps to the next step. We do everything with material, food, and training. The team is the best within this. That’s why you have to trust".
Team DS Merijn Zeeman said earlier this month that "
I don’t think they work with the same professionalism as us" in relation to suggestions from several French teams that the team would be involved in a non-permited performance-enhancing scheme.
"We have to stay vigilant, but I think cycling has undergone a real change. When I see our riders, there is not this underlying idea that if they cheat, they can win," Zeeman said at the time, now reiterated by the team's new star.
