Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s Matthew Brennan delivered a statement ride on stage 5 of the 2025 Tour de Pologne, outkicking compatriot Ben Turner to claim a World Tour level win — and Visma’s second stage victory of the race.
The 20-year-old Brit timed his uphill sprint to perfection, pouncing late in Bielsko-Biała after a chaotic final 10 kilometres saw multiple GC hopefuls test their legs and teams jostle for control on a punchy finishing circuit. “I came here hoping to win a stage. As a team, we were very motivated to achieve that,” Brennan said post-stage. “Olav [Kooij] is also with us – he was the best on the first stage – but we are still hungry for more wins, so I’m happy I could finish off the team’s hard work. I’m very happy.”
The final climb, short but stinging, invited attacks from the likes of Marco Frigo, Jan Christen and Alberto Bettiol, but none could make it stick. Once the regrouping happened inside the final kilometre, the stage was set for the fastest finishers with climbing legs — and Brennan didn’t waste his shot.
Brennan’s sharp sprint capped off a tactically tight performance from Visma, who kept cool heads amid the flurry of late attacks and committed to the Brit when it mattered. With Kooij’s earlier win and Brennan now on the board, the Dutch squad continues to show its depth across terrain — and generations.

Lapeira keeps the race lead

The stage also saw Paul Lapeira retain his grip on the yellow jersey, despite another demanding day in the saddle for the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team leader.
“It was a long and tough day,” Lapeira admitted. “We rode at the front of the peloton for a long time, then other teams helped too. On the final climb, the pace was very high, all the way to the finish. I feel good – of course, I’m a bit tired, but everything’s fine on the bike. Tomorrow will be a very hard stage. We’ll see how it goes, but I want to defend the yellow jersey.”
For Brennan, though, the job was already done — the promise he showed in the junior ranks now translating to the World Tour, and Visma reaping the rewards of their investment in youth. “We’re still hungry,” Brennan said in conclusion. Judging by stage 5, Visma’s appetite isn’t going away any time soon.
