"I didn't expect to win here" - Damiano Caruso wins for the first time in more than three years
Cycling
Damiano Caruso broke his three-year long fasting during the fourth stage of 2025 Vuelta a Burgos. The Bahrain - Victorious rider joined today's breakaway which featured renown riders such as Rui Costa (EF Education-EasyPost) and Javier Romo (Movistar Team), but was able to shake off everyone on the hilly final stretch of the stage to ride towards an unexpected triumph.
After crossing the finish line, Caruso expressed his joy, noting, "It's a great satisfaction. I'm already 37 years old, and it's not easy to establish yourself at this high level."
The Italian didn't think he would put a cherry on top of his season after his 5th overall at the Giro d'Italia. "It was an unexpected victory, as I didn't expect to get here, but I arrived full of energy and am happy to have been able to do this job," he said.
Caruso highlighted the preparation that brought him to this point after "a long period at altitude, almost a month in Pordoi, at an average temperature of around fifteen degrees, and all that work has paid off." He also praised the Burgos terrain, which offers "superlative, very demanding climbs, and the high temperatures can greatly influence the physical effort."

- I hope you are wrong but I suspect you will be proved correct. It might do something for Scottish tourism - although due to logistics the route skips the most spectacular parts of Scotland. It will bring in short term money no doubt, but will cycling overall in the U,K benifit? I doubt it. Even at £2 a litre the bits love thei cars,Cyclingsbestfan07-11-2026
- Lucky to not get disqualified
leedorney07-11-2026 - The road from Holyrood to Edinburgh Castle is a nice steady climb of just over a mile that is cobbled in many parts. (Very slippery if wet!) If the teams are going by one by one that will give fans an even better view of the riders up close than the castle esplanade.Cyclingsbestfan07-11-2026

- It would be great if the World Champion's jersey could be rotated among McNulty, Simmons, and Jorgenson. They threaded the needle perfectly. If each hadn't done exactly what he did, exactly when he did it, the race would have gone to one of the more heralded superstars. That said, how nice that this humble and hardworking guy gets his moment in the sun.
