Vuelta a Andalucia: Magnus Sheffield wins stage 3 with late attack

Magnus Sheffield has profited from a crash in the leading group and the lack of firepower to launch an attack in the final kilometers and net his first stage win as a professional. The American rider from INEOS Grenadiers has given INEOS Grenadiers' fifth win of the season.

On a day that started on a negative note with Gazprom - Rusvelo and Human Powered Health not taking to the start with added Covid cases within their structures. On a day that suited a breakaway, almost no fight to get in one happened, as a modest group containing Xabier Isasa and Ibai Azurmendi (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Juan Lopez-Cozar (Burgos-BH), and Jon Barrenetxea (Caja Rural - Seguros RGA) went up the road.

UAE easily controlled the group throughout the day, however in the final set of climbs things got out of control as UAE pushed the pace, and then subsequently got attacked. With the sprinters out of the picture, chasing behind, the likes of Lennard Kämna and Simon Yates stirred the group attacking on the last climb, seeing for a few kilometers very dangerous splits between the GC riders that eventually came together.

In the final kilometers Bahrain - Victorious pulled the front group preventing the peloton from coming back, it was unsure the reason of the work but it benefited the riders who were in front looking to fight it out for the win. In the final three kilometers INEOS leadout into town but several riders, including of the British team crashed. Kämna attacked again in the closing kilometers, and Sheffield followed and went over in the final uphill ramps.

Having the power, the American held off the remainds of the chasing group, with Simon Clarke and Stan Dewulf leading it through the finish.
