The opening stage of the Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var was a complicated one to control, however as the flattest stage it was the day where the sprinters had the pressure to deliver, and Lotto Soudal's Caleb Ewan confirmed his status as the man to beat.
The breakaway set off early on with Morne van Niekerk (St Michel - Auber93), Evaldas Šiškevičius (Go Sport - Roubaix Lille Métropole), Maël Guegan (Team U Nantes Atlantique) and Tristan Delacroix (Nice Métropole Côte d'Azur). The gap only grew to around 3 minutes maximum as Lotto Soudal and Team Arkéa Samsic controlled the peloton.
In the final climb bells rang as Peter Sagan was dropped very quickly, revealing his current lack of form. Kevin Geniets launched a blistering attack and went over the summit in front alone, but was caught in the next descent as a flurry of attacks dragged the peloton quickly into the finish. DSM's Mark Donovan also tried to escape the peloton in the final kilometers through the technical streets of La-Seyne-sur-Mer, however Lotto Soudal closed the moves to reel everything into a bunch sprint.
The Belgian team leadout Ewan to the line well, and despite an early sprint by Anthony Turgis surprising, there was no match to Caleb Ewan when he launched his sprint, winning confortably. Turgis and Nacer Bouhanni wrapped up the podium.
