A day of ups and downs for
Team Visma | Lease a Bike who saw over half their team go down in a crash but later rode to victory with
Jonas Vingegaard. It's hard to imagine a better outcome for the Dutch team after such a disaster en route to Limone. The
Vuelta a Espana organizers have also shared on-bike footage of Vingegaard crashing, recorded from the rider that fell right in front of him.
After the flash interview, the Dane was also present at a press conference where he had the opportunity to extend on his words and feelings regarding today's victory and move into the race lead. "I wouldn't say I really needed this win, otherwise we would have chased as a team. We didn't, because we're going to choose our battles in this Vuelta. Today we didn't want to waste too much energy".
It was all about positioning and keeping the race stable, but the finale was ridden hard enough that it ended up favouring the climber against more explosive riders such as Giulio Ciccone and Tom Pidcock. "The finale was very tough, with a consistently high pace. Drafting was a big advantage for a long time, but with 200 meters to go, Giulio attacked, and to be honest, I didn't think I could catch him".
The crash
Whilst initially playing it down, the Dane does admit that he crashed at high speed and felt some pain right after it happened and the situation stabilized. "I don't think so. I crashed quite hard, but it doesn't seem like I'm in too much pain. I have some bruises, of course, but I think I slid a bit more because it was so slippery. That's why I don't really have any abrasions or anything." Teammate Axel Zingle was not so lucky, suffering a dislocated shoulder.
"At first, you feel a bit stiff, and when I got back on the bike, I felt my knee a bit. But it got better quickly after that, so I came away with just a few minor scratches and no major consequences. It's still a long way to Madrid, so we'll take it day by day and decide later whether we want to give away the leader's jersey in a good way or not."
