Tibor del Grosso is known as one of the best bike handlers in the peloton, known for his prowess in cyclocross. Like Mathieu van der Poel, his teammate and leader, the Dutchman is coming through onto the road scene quite successfully. However, after dropping out of contention at Strade Bianche, he entertained fans in his own way.
The Dutchman, part of Alpecin-Premier Tech, began his season this Saturday at Strade Bianche and is building up towards the Ardennes classics. After a successful cyclocross season, where he managed to beat Wout van Aert on Heusden-Zolder, won the Dutch national championships and also finished second at the Hulst World Championships; he started off his road campaign relaxed.
His bike handling skills, even with unknown form, made him an outsider for the Italian race which consists of many gravel sectors where not only the legs and positioning matter. However, he did not ultimately have the form to contest for a result on the day, and was past of one of the delayed groups throughout the race.
But in the age of technology and social media, it is possible to see what the riders that are far away from the TV screens are doing. Del Grosso in particular committed to providing a show in Tuscany, doing wheelies in the most unlikely locations such as the brutally steep Le Tolfe sterrato sector and the Via Santa Caterina itself.
With gradients of up to 18% and 16% respectively, it is hard to get a bike up it in the first place. Del Grosso however, in several videos which are possible to see below, rode up them in his own way and has given fans a good reason to stay well beyond the staggering victorious Tadej Pogacar. He will be racing Tirreno-Adriatico alongside Mathieu van der Poel from Monday onwards this upcoming week.
