Stage 2 winner
Mark Cavendish didn't make it through today without an incident as he crashed on the queen stage of the
Tour of Oman. The Briton has made the echelons split that occured with 70 kilometers to go in the front group but crashed afterwards.
”As is normal with the chaos of echelons forming I had a touch of wheels and unfortunately I came down quite heavily," Cavendish said. With 62 kilometers to go as the front group worked together to keep the gap a touch of wheels occured and the sprinter hit the deck, alongside Groupama - FDJ's Ignatas Konovalovas.
"I am lucky that my injuries seem to not be too bad and I was able to get on my bike, with just some bruising and external abrasions. I hope that the other riders involved are also ok and I would also like to thank the race doctor for looking after me," he completed.
Luckily, the effects of the crash weren't big and Cavendish remounted to join the chasing group which eventually got back to the front of the race. He struggled to complete the stage atop the brutal and exposed Jabal Al Akhdhar ascent.
Tomorrow Cavendish will have an opportunity to grab another stage win as the race goes into it's final day in a rather flat yet tricky stage into Matrah Corniche.
