VIDEO: La Vuelta finishes in Córdoba today... Throwback to 2011 with Liquigas' iconic downhill team attack and Peter Sagan's first-ever Grand Tour win

This Vuelta a España has in the space of six days already thrown in several iconic moments. From Quick-Step borrowing Burgos' team bus, to a stage start in a supermarket and Ben O'Connor's massive GC raid in one single day... Today the riders finish in Córdoba where in the exact same finale back in 2011, Liquigas - Cannondale did the unthinkable and delivered a new star in the form of Peter Sagan.

The stage at the time went over the appropriately-named Alto del 14%, a climb which reaches steep gradients towards it's finale, but in fact the decisions were made afterwards. The Italian team orchestrated one of the most iconic attacks in modern cycling, splitting the group in the descent with a team attack that left a group of five in front, four being their own riders including Sagan and defending champion Vincenzo Nibali.

It was an attack that worked to perfection, and it was Sagan's first Grand Tour victory, the first out of many - and out of three, in that Vuelta. Today the Vuelta a España peloton races on the exact same roads and it will certainly bring reasons to be excited over the possible spectacle.

You can see the highlights of that stage 13 years ago in the video shared below:
