There is a lot of talk about riders taking more and more risks nowadays in road cycling, specially when it comes to positioning. This was certainly on display at Gent Wevelgem, a tense race, but one where a particular crash was caused by pure recklessness from Jordi Meeus, who was given a Yellow card following the race as a result.
The instances of mass crashes in the peloton this year has been increasing, despite the efforts to increase consequences for risky behaviours. One such is a Yellow card, which can bring consequences up to a suspension depending on the spacing between incidents. Jordi Meeus of Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe was one of the big favourites for yesterday's classic in Belgium, however he didn't reach Wevelgem before falling.
This happened with a long way to go still to the finale of the race, but was a very controversial moment. Meeus rode into a sidewalk, and then didn't brake on time to avoid hitting other riders in his way, leading to a crash involving several others. Interestingly, the Yellow Card wasn't attributed in the race's report, but added later - most likely due to the many calls in social media for action.
