Victor Langellotti of
INEOS Grenadiers has won stage 6 of the
Tour de Pologne and has become the new race leader. The rider from Monaco has become the first ever from his nation to win at the highest level of the sport.
The sixth day of racing was by some considered the queen stage but that would always come down to how it would be raced. In the past it's a finale that has created big differences however it was not always the case. The 147-kilometer long stage had a 9-rider breakaway:
Olav Kooij and Matthew Brennan of Visma, Timo Kielich, Enzo Paleni, Lorenzo Milesi, Paul Magnier, Reuben Thompson, Chris Hamilton and Nadav Raisberg. But this wasn't a threatening group, in fact including the three strongest sprinters in the race.
With around 45 kilometers to go there were moves and splits in the peloton but it would come back together and then the action would be left to the final two ascents. There were some attacks on that penultimate ascent but UAE then settled with pacing up to the final climb, although the GC group was small and race leader Pau Lapeira would be dropped after struggling with the injuries of stage 2.
In the final ascent Rafal Majka paced until Jan Christen attacked just outside the final kilometer. Antonio Tiberi then made a move and
Brandon McNulty attacked over the top. UAE seemed to be heading to a stage win and race lead but in the final 300 meters, as most riders faded, Victor Langellotti springed from the chasing group in pursuit of McNulty.
The gap looked too big to close but the INEOS Grenadiers put on a perfectly timed attack to catch McNulty and overtake the American to take his first stage win of the year. He has jumped into the race lead and provided Monaco with it's first ever World Tour win.
