Although Del Toro opened the race by winning the first stage and briefly wore the leader’s jersey, the general classification shifted repeatedly through the opening half of the week.
Remco Evenepoel’s time trial victory and Antonio Tiberi’s summit success on Jebel Mobrah reshaped the standings, forcing Del Toro onto the offensive rather than into defence.
The race ultimately turned on Stage 6 to Jebel Hafeet. Beginning the day 21 seconds behind Tiberi, Del Toro attacked inside the final kilometres of the climb, distancing his Italian rival and riding solo to the stage win. That acceleration overturned the general classification and delivered the 20-second margin he would defend to Abu Dhabi.
There were no crosswinds or late incidents on the final sprint stage to disturb the standings, allowing Del Toro to complete the race safely in the peloton as Jonathan Milan won the stage.
Stability behind the winner
Behind Del Toro and Tiberi, Plapp secured third overall at 1:14, capping a consistent week for Team Jayco AlUla. Harold Tejada and Felix Gall rounded out the top five, both within 1:34 of the winner.
Lennert Van Eetvelt finished sixth at 1:44, followed by Derek Gee-West at 1:47. Jorgen Nordhagen and Tobias Halland Johannessen ensured strong representation for Team Visma | Lease a Bike and Uno-X Mobility respectively, while Evenepoel completed the top ten at 2:25 after his mixed week of time trial dominance and mountain struggles.
For Del Toro, this was not a surprise emergence but another step in an already upward trajectory. After showing his climbing credentials throughout 2025 and early 2026, he delivered when the race demanded it most, taking control on Jebel Hafeet and managing the final kilometres with composure.
The 2026 UAE Tour belonged to the climbers on its decisive summit finish, and on that day, Del Toro proved strongest.
