The prologue of the Tour Down Under has created some interesting differences to start off the race. Samuel Watson of INEOS Grenadiers took the early victory and although the 3.6-kilometer long route didn't seem to be quite enough to create important differences, it's not exactly the case as some GC riders shed very important seconds in the streets of Adelaide.
Riding at an average speed superior to 50Km/h in the technical course, it was Sam Watson who took the first ochre jersey, beating NSN Cycling Team's Ethan Vernon by 0.6 seconds - the only two riders cracking the 50K/h barrier. Laurence Pithie was third on the day 2 seconds back, and the fourth rider on the stage Jay Vine already opens up a different sub-plot for the stage, as he was the fastest GC man.
Despite having no time trial bike, Australia's national champion in the discipline lost only 4 seconds but has gained time on the whole competition, and will be ahead of them into stage 2 which will finish in Uraidla and feature a few difficult ascents. Vine has gained time on Mauro Schmid who finished 5 seconds back, Finn Fisher-Black at 7 and Luke Plapp at 8 who were the men that defended themselves the best. Amongst these, Michael Leonard managed to jump into the lead of the youth classification after finishing 13th on the day.
Matthew Brennan and Sam Welsford are both 10 seconds behind in the overall classification, which means that they could on paper jump into the race lead tomorrow if they win the stage.

GC time lost for many

Adam Yates is already 15 seconds behind Jay Vine and in the second half of the standings are also riders such as Corbin Strong and Lennert van Eetvelt 17 behind, Chris Harper at 18, Simone Velasco at 19, and Gullaume Martin already losing 24 seconds in the space of just over 4 minutes on flat roads.
