Tour de Suisse race doctor on care that was provided to Gino Mäder on crash scene - "He came back to life, he had a heartbeat again"

Cycling has been hit by incredibly tragic news this morning, as Bahrain - Victorious shared the news that their rider Gino Mäder has died as a result of yesterday's crash. The race's doctor who was on sight tells how the best efforts were done to stabilize the situation.

The Swiss rider crashed minutes after Magnus Sheffield in the same location of the descent of the Albulapass, where the speeds were incredibly high. Details are not known and will not be speculated on his injuries, but talking to Blick race doctor Roland Kretsch has explained that in the site of the crash, a ravine many meters down the road, the medical team performed CPR for 25 minutes.

The rider was at the time unconscious, a picture had circulated social media of the location, but it will not be shared. Kretsch talks of how the immediate medical support saved Mäder's life at the time: "He came back to life, he had a heartbeat again."

However, despite the best efforts, which included an airlift to the Chur hospital and a stint in the traumatology department, the team shared that this morning the situation that was feared the most could not be prevented.
