Tour de France: Tadej Pogacar wins stage 6 and takes yellow jersey

It was a chaotic day at the Tour de France, with Wout van Aert the yellow jersey joining the day's breakaway, but to no gain. It was a reduced group sprint for the win, where Tadej Pogacar easily won the stage and became the new leader of the Tour de France.

As a day in which the breakaway had high chances of succeeding, the early battle to get in the breakaway was long and intense. It was only after over 80 kilometers of racing that a move managed to get away, including yellow jersey Wout van Aert, Quinn Simmons (Trek - Segafredo) and Jakob Fuglsang (Israel - Premier Tech). After early moves that saw the likes of Pogacar, Vingegaard and Thomas on the move.

The trio was a strong one, having their gap limited to four minutes. However with Fuglsang as a big threat for the GC and the trio having good chances of going all the way, several teams committed to chasing in the peloton. Fuglsang dropped back to the peloton when the gap came down to two minutes, Simmons followed and race leader Wout van Aert resisted the surge from the peloton until 10 kilometers to go.

In the penultimate climb of the day saw Alexis Vuillermoz attack. Tadej Pogacar launched a move afterwards from behind, however having little effect in the peloton. The Frenchman entered the final hilltop with a small lead however the UAE Team Emirates riders took over the pace and made it complicated to attack.

Primoz Roglic was the first to launch the sprint, however Tadej Pogacar easily managed to outsprint the competition. Michael Matthews sprinted to second place, with David Gaudu finishing third.
