INEOS Grenadiers' young Briton has taken a brilliant World Champion title in cyclocross just over a month ago and ever since he has set his focus onto the road season. After taking a break, he returned to competition at the Volta ao Algarve, and after riding the opening weekend he is happy with the form he's having at this time of year.
"I made too many mistakes this weekend. Certainly, it's still learning, and learning to lead the team," Pidcock said in a post-race interview at Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne. He finished 18th at Omloop and 70th in Kuurne, however results that must be taken with a grain of salt as he appeared to intentionally not fight for more points in both race's finale. At Omloop he was in the move with Tiesj Benoot and Wout van Aert, and at Kuurne he was once again stiring up the race in the bergs, playing a role in the peloton's implosion.
He added: “The amount we improved from yesterday was phenomenal and that’s a really good sign for the Classics - this year and beyond. It's a team that can certainly learn and grow to go and win the Classics."
"I'm looking forward to next weekend. It'll be a good race so Strade should be good fun. It's one of my favourite races so it'll be great to win that one day," he concluded. Pidcock is set to return to Strade Bianche where, despite not having the best form, he should be one of the favourites, having in mind that neither Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert and Egan Bernal will be at the start, for various different reasons.
As Pidcock eyes a long spring with the cobbled and Ardennes classics within target, the Giro d'Italia also looms large as he will be taking another step in his development as a possible future stage-racer, something he has shown tremendous potential in as an under-23 rider.
