Lots of riders abandoned during the stage, and a few others have crashed including Eddie Dunbar who was a late withdrawal. Lots of teams chased ferociously for the chance of taking glory late in the day, and the fight for positioning into the final climb was in itself very fast which cut down the gap further to the front group who had in the meantime lost Meurisse and Muñoz.
Into the final ascent Esteban Chaves attacked in the peloton, and later on another Colombian Nairo Quintana made a surprising move. But UAE's work brought them back and Juan Ayuso attack towards the summit, with
Tom Pidcock going over the top with an explosive attack, although too short to make differences - whilst Dversnes from the breakaway crossed the summit with 15 seconds still over the peloton.
After the descent there were some attacks in the peloton but there was never an actual chase on Dversnes. The Uno-X Mobility rider had great legs and kept a consistent pace which earned him a brilliant win in Pergola.
Mathieu van der Poel sprinted to second place ahead of Tom Pidcock, whilst Filippo Ganna had a mechanical issue in the final kilometers.
