Vuelta a Espana 2026 Classifications Update Stage 8 - Pogacar out of the race; Enric Mas the red jersey for the first time in his career

The first red jersey of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana will be decided immediately in Monaco, where a 9.4-kilometre individual time trial opens a race featuring more than 58,000 metres of climbing, repeated summit finishes and a second race against the clock later in the final week.
This live classifications hub will be updated after every stage with the latest General Classification, Points Classification, Mountains Classification and Best Young Rider standings, tracking the fight for the red, green, polka-dot and white jerseys from Stage 1 on August 22 through to the final stage in Granada on September 13.
The overall battle will be shaped by repeated opportunities for the climbers, from the early Pyrenean and Andorran tests to Calar Alto, Sierra de la Pandera, Penas Blancas and the decisive Collado del Alguacil. The two individual time trials and bonus seconds provide further chances for the gaps between the main contenders to change.
Sprint finishes and intermediate sprints will drive the points competition, breakaways can quickly transform the mountains standings and the white jersey will develop alongside many of the same stages that decide the general classification. Each update will show the latest standings after the day's racing and highlight the important changes across all four competitions.

Tadej Pogacar has crashed out of the Vuelta a España and the race has been turned on its head. The Slovenian hit a rock on the road and was forced to abandon after suffering multiple injuries. Enric Mas has taken up the race lead, a massive moment in the Movistar rider's career who will now be in charge of the overall classification.
He now holds 1 minute of lead over Primoz Roglic who has climbed to second, and 1:11 minutes on Felix Gall. The GC battle is now wide open with multiple contenders to win the race and to finish on the podium. The Top3 hold some margin over the rest, whilst behind less than two minutes separate the rest of the Top8.
Sepp Kuss is now fourth on GC, 2:15 minutes away, only one second ahead of Oscar Onley and seven ahead of Richard Carapaz. Mattias Skjelmose and Harold Tejada follow closely. Gregor Muhlberger is now ninth and Pogacar's compatriot Jakob Omrzel has climbed to the Top10 as a result.

Points Classification Standings after Stage 8
The points classification had Tadej Pogacar as the main favourite, and from today onwards a new clear man to beat as emerged. Wout Van Aert has been scoring points all throughout the race's intermediate sprints, and that effort is now paying off as the Belgian has carved a meaningful lead over the rest of the field.
The lack of any other rider aiming for the points means his own teammate Matthew Brennan is closest at 67 points (against Van Aert's 124); whilst Mads Pedersen sits third with only 58 and no visible intentions of aiming for the jersey.

King of the Mountains Classification Standings after Stage 8
Andreas Leknessund is the new leader of the KOM classification. The Norwegian already wore the jersey today, but he is now the official leader after the withdrawal of Pogacar, with 19 points. Like in 2024, Wout Van Aert may aim to lead both classifications, as the points captured today on the stage's sole climb means he now has 16 and is in second place. A mix of GC riders and breakaway hopefuls follow behind.
