Primoz Roglic was brought into Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe at the turn of the year for one reason: to win Grand Tours for a team not at all used to doing so. Although his main aim of Tour de France glory might not have gone to plan, at the 2024 Vuelta a Espana, Roglic repaid the faith shown in his to secure a record equalling 4th Red Jersey win.
“This is a very special moment. This is only the second time in our 15-year team history that we have won a Grand Tour," assesses a delighted Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe boss Ralph Denk in his post-stage 21 assessment with the team's official website. "In addition to Primoz's consistently strong performance, I am particularly pleased with the great team performance."
Although there was a slight scare on stage 20 as a bout of food poisoning hit the team, ending up with Daniel Martinez, Patrick Gamper and Nico Denz abandoning, the strength in numbers of the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe has been evident throughout and is perhaps best highlighted by the fact that the team were the only one to secure two top 10 finishes in the general classification as Florian Lipowitz (7th) joined Roglic.
"These three weeks have been a rollercoaster ride, but the guys never doubted that we would wear the red jersey in Madrid," Denk concludes. "Today is an extraordinary day, but we're working hard to ensure that it soon becomes our new standard.”
Roglic himself even shared a few words with his team. “The closer you get to the end, the more you want to finish it off. I tried to motivate myself to do it. I pushed, it was a fast time trial and everything went well. I'm happy. Four wins - it's crazy. I just want to enjoy it,” added the Slovenian.
