There's something about the Vuelta a Espana that really brings the best out in Primoz Roglic. In 2024, this was again the case as the Slovenian bounced back from crashing out of the Tour de France to sweep up the Red Jersey at La Vuelta for the record-equalling 4th time in his career.
“It’s nice [to hold the record for most overall victories in La Vuelta]. Today, I wanted to finish it off. It was tough but everything went fine and I’m happy," reflected the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe leader in his post-stage interview, after missing out on victory against the clock in the final time trial, to Stefan Kung. "I saw Stefan Küng’s performance. We all know he’s strong in this kind of flat time-trials. Still, I tried to motivate myself to go for it, otherwise it’s even harder. So I pushed and in the end it was hard but I definitely want to congratulate him, he did a really good job. He was incredibly strong today."
With Roglic's Vuelta a Espana win combining with compatriot Tadej Pogacar's Giro d'Italia and Tour de France success, the Slovenians have now completed their Grand Tour stranglehold of the 2024 season. "On my side, I’m enjoying. I have no words, it’s incredible," Roglic, himself a former Giro d'Italia winner, says of his and Pogacar's joint triumph.
"It’s a lot of sacrifice to get there. It’s not only me. My family, everyone around, we all sacrifice dearly for this. I just feel happy that I can do it. I really appreciate the support that I get," Roglic concludes with a smile, already casting an eye towards next year and potentially a record breaking 5th Red Jersey success. "Yes, five victories would be nice [laughs]. It’s never enough… But four is already crazy.”
