Like most of the big races on the international calendar, Paris-Roubaix includes an amateur race the day before the official race for all those amateurs who want to tackle the 'Hell of the North' route through the Paris-Roubaix Challenge.
Cyclotourists can choose from three possible routes: 70 kilometers with 8 pavé sections, 145 kilometers with 19 pavé sections or 170 km with the same 29 pavé sections faced by the pros. All the races, of course, finish in the mythical Roubaix velodrome.
After the race, we were able to chat in the bar next to the velodrome with a group of Italians who were drinking some well-deserved beers after the 145 kilometers with 19 cobbled sections that they had put between their chests and their backs, and they gave us the key to get through the race.
"You have to prepare your hands and back very well. You have to train those two parts of the body a lot. With your hands it's absolutely crazy and if you're not prepared you suffer a lot. The rattling of the cobblestones also hurts your back, so you have to put in months of work so you don't give up," said Alfredo, a retiree from Lucca (Italy) who came to the race with a group of friends.
CiclismoAlDia were also able to talk to Gonzalo and Joaquín, two Asturians who also decided to take part in the 145 km race and who arrived at the finish line looking very good: "It was a fantastic experience, we had raced in Liège and Flanders, but this is completely different, the pavé is really crazy and you have to come very well prepared and with a well-prepared bike to avoid having a bad time". Hundreds of cyclists took part in the spectacular test in the run-up to Paris-Roubaix on a day they will never forget in their lives.
